What You'll Do
No watercolors, no brushes—Katie Netti's preferred painting method relies on a needle and thread. In a five-hour workshop, she demonstrates how to interpret and recreate a photograph of your choice using a technique called embroidery painting. While providing all necessary materials, she helps even those who've never sewed before create a colorful work of art.
Transfer a Photo onto Fabric
Three days before class, send Katie a JPEG of any image you want so she can make a laser-jet printout guide. Then, on the day of the class, you'll transfer the ink of the picture onto fabric by using a burnishing method.
Stitch a Photograph
With a blend of long and short stitches, create an expressive interpretation of the photograph on the fabric. While you can follow the guide image, you can also add a personal touch to create something more impressionistic or abstract.
Take The Lesson Home
Katie doles out any tools and tips needed for you to finish the design at home.
Owner of UrbanOil Ceramics, Art Teacher
Through her own inventiveness and determination, Katie Netti found a way to combine two of her passions—making art and helping others unlock their own creative potential. When she isn't sharing her knowledge as a high school art teacher, she stays busy with gallery showings each year. It's not only her artwork that's earned accolades: School Arts magazine featured one of her lesson plans in a 2006 issue.
