What You’ll Do
Mosaics certainly are greater than the sum of their parts, combining broken glass and ceramic into patterns and sequences seen around the world. In her 2.5-hour workshop, artist Katrina Doran introduces students to the elements of a stunning mosaic mural, from the colorful shards to the history of the art form itself. Students combine these into their own mosaic piece, which will be incorporated into a landmark mural.
Tour an Artist’s Haven
Doran, her husband, and her son have created a studio that’s an inspiration unto itself, filled with charcoal portraits, large paintings, prints, and delicate sculptures.
Create Part of a Mural
Follow Doran’s guidance while creating a section of a site-specific mural, set to serve as part of a landmark in Dallas’s Design District.
Bring Home a Gift
All guests will leave with a gift from the studio.
Even before she discovered her medium, Katrina Doran lived a creative life. Working as a costume designer and performer, she dabbled in the world of shards before taking a weekend workshop with celebrated mosaic artist Sonia King—and a weekend was all it took to get hooked. More than a decade later, Doran introduces others to her art form as an instructor at the Creative Arts Center of Dallas, drawing on that early performance experience to make her lessons exciting and engaging.
