Rodgers and Hammerstein’s drama was hailed as “the best musical of the 20th century” by Time, and has remained a beloved favorite since its debut in 1945. The story starts simply enough: young love blossoms between carnival barker Billy and millworker Julie. But bad luck—and bad choices—seem to separate them forever when Billy is killed in a heist gone wrong. Fifteen years later, his spirit is given one day back on Earth to make things right for his widow and daughter. The source of such favorite songs as “June is Bustin’ Out All Over,” “If I Loved You,” and “You’ll Never Walk Alone,” Carousel warms hearts and jerks tears with its story of lasting love and redemption.

This production is “exquisitely sung and masterfully acted by a cast of Broadway veterans” raves Huffington Post, while the New York Times says “A chance to hear this cherished score delivered with such ample vocal and musical resources should not be missed” and that the show is “impressive… as beautifully sung — and beautifully played, by the Lyric orchestra under conductor David Chase — as anything on Broadway right now”. Steven Pasquale (The Good Wife, Broadway’s Bridges of Madison County) traces the redemptive arc of the resurrected roustabout while Laura Osnes (Cinderella, Bonnie and Clyde) plays the unfortunate Julie. Broadway luminaries such as Tony Roberts, Charlotte d’Amboise, Jarrod Emick, and Matthew Hydzik, as well as opera star Denyce Graves, fill out the rest of the cast, alongside actors and dancers culled from the Chicago Shakespeare Theater and the Joffrey Ballet. See what the critics are saying.
