Mike Longo and the New York State of the Art Jazz Ensemble
Mike Longo was the protege of jazz legend Oscar "Maharaja of the Keyboard" Peterson, who first taught Mike the textures and finesses of jazz piano. Yet the name Mike is usually tied to is that of Dizzy Gillespie, the grand trumpeter who took him under his cheeks and appointed him band leader of the Dizzy Gillespie Quintet and pianist for the Dizzy Gillespie All-Star Band—a role he played until Dizzy's dying day. As a bandleader himself, Mike can (and does) teach a master class in the art of jazz. With his own big-band, the NY State of the Art Jazz Ensemble, he carries on Dizzy's musical legacy in performances that soar and swing like Tarzan with a faulty jetpack. Singer Ira Hawkins lends his smoky pipes to the evening, along with the youthful Ray Blue and the Pro-Am Ensemble.
