Carmen the Musical

On the streets of Seville, naïve soldier Don José falls under the spell of the gypsy Carmen. After forsaking his children, his sweetheart, and his military duties, he still loses his newfound flame to Escamillo, a dashing bullfighter. Spurred into a jealous rage, Don José seeks revenge in violence, leading to a climactic end. Throughout Carmen, operatic classics carry the narrative, including the instantly recognizable "Habanera," which rises and falls as it laments love's fleeting nature. Other showstoppers include the triumphant, horn- and flute-filled "Les Toreadors," which opens the show with the energy of a toddler on a pure-sugar diet.

The 120-member Worcester Chorus, joined by the Worcester Children’s Chorus and guest soloists, sings an abridged, English-language version of Bizet’s masterpiece. This concert version focuses solely on the music, serving as an accessible, all-ages introduction to the 19th-century drama. Before the show, at 7 p.m., a pre-concert talk led by opera expert Steven Ledbetter dives into the little-known facts of Bizet and his classic story to enrich audience understanding.
