What You'll Get
Though outdoor music festivals are fun for bands and fans alike, they mostly exist so that roadies can collect enough frisbees to replace the broken china on the tour bus. Help them out with this deal to Party in the Park, featuring The Flaming Lips, Young the Giant, Awolnation, Dawes, and Ponderosa at Centennial Olympic Park. For $29, you get two early-bird general-admission tickets on Saturday, May 19 (a $58 value, including all fees). Festival hours are 3 p.m. to 11 p.m.
Balancing sunshine with a fountain-filled plaza and shade trees, the 21-acre urban oasis of Centennial Olympic Park beckons music fans of all ages into a daylong deluge of gold-medal indie-rock at the inaugural Party in the Park. Headlining head-trippers The Flaming Lips specialize in over-the-top live shows gushing with sensory overload. Throughout the psychedelic parade, singer Wayne Coyne leads his experimental band of “fearless freaks” through hits such as “Do You Realize??” and “She Don’t Use Jelly,” sometimes while rolling over heads in his plastic bubble or hypnotizing the audience into believing they see a grown man rolling around in a plastic bubble.
Led by sweet-voiced Sameer Gadhia, California quintet Young the Giant seem to have come together for the very purpose of inspiring sunny-day head-bobbing with genial hits “Cough Syrup” and “Apartment.” Aaron Bruno and the seductive brutes of Awolnation create megalithic symphonies such as “Sail” and “Not Your Fault” that jump-rope along to hip-hop beats. California folk rockers Dawes yank heartstrings with high-lonesome music reminiscent of The Band, and Atlanta’s own Ponderosa summons tumbleweeds and barroom brawls with their brawny rock.
