Preakness Stakes

The second leg in the Triple Crown series, the Preakness Stakes for both humans and horses. Sure, the winning owner takes home a sterling-silver replica of the Woodlawn Vase valued at $30,000, but it’s the horse who receives the more elegant prize: a blanket of Black-Eyed Susans—actually daisies in disguise—draped across its withers, drawing cheers from the crowd and gapes from hungry bees. Such prizes join buglers, Maryland state songs, and the painting of weather vanes as just some of the traditions to grace Pimlico Race Course annually since the first Preakness Stakes in 1873. While attending the race—typically held on the third Saturday in May—visitors can make a day of it with everything from four-star dining in the Terrace Dining Room to live race action from Pimlico’s fabled grandstands.
