The Scouting Report

Last September, in the fifth and decisive game of the Texas League championship series, Missions’ first baseman Johan Limonta stepped to the plate. It was the top of the fourth inning, and the bases were loaded. Facing a full count, Limonta launched a grand slam over the right-centerfield wall, all but sealing his team’s victory over the Arkansas Travelers. The Missions won that game 5-0, and for the second time in three seasons, topped the Travelers for the league title.

In just over a month, the Missions will slide into their cleats, re-lace their gloves, restock the dugout’s secret candy drawer, and charge back onto the diamond in pursuit of their sixth Texas League championship since 2002. The 2014 season kicks off at Wolff Stadium on April 10, when the Springfield Cardinals swoop into town. That series leads a full summer slate, highlighted by special promotions and a visit from the vengeful Travelers on the last weekend in May.

San Antonio Missions

On Wednesday, September 14, 2011, the Missions began what would turn out to be the longest postseason game in Texas League history. Playing against the Arkansas Travelers in the league’s championship series, the Missions battled to a 5–4 victory that took 20 innings—and a spillover into Thursday—to settle. The win propelled the Missions to a series sweep, earning the franchise its 12th championship since the Texas League was founded in 1888.

Throughout those 113 years, the Texas League underwent many changes, but San Antonio stood firm—the only one of the league’s six original teams to play in three different centuries. As the San Diego Padres’ Double-A affiliate, the Missions continue their legacy at their home field, Wolff Stadium, a 6,200-seat facility complete with a grass berm in left field where fans can sprawl out to watch the innings and where umpires sunbathe between games.
