Songs for a New World
A theatrical song cycle about new beginnings, Jason Robert Brown’s beloved Songs for a New World opens, fittingly, on the deck of a Spanish sailing ship in the year 1492. But this narrative is far from clear-cut. Instead of telling just one story, it tells more than a dozen—one for each song sung on stage—finding surprising similarities between the first Europeans to step foot on American soil, a frustrated woman on the ledge of a skyscraper looking down at a gathering crowd, a wrongfully incarcerated prisoner whose only crime was trying to do good, and the mother of a soldier in the American Revolution. What ties them all together is the thrilling terror of a looming decision to go forward or turn back—whether that means discovering a new land, leaving an abusive spouse, or stepping up to the challenge of parenthood.
Much like the Wicked Witch singing “Dancing in the Rain,” each character dissolves at the end of his or her song, but all are played by the same talented foursome. It takes world-class talent to portray such a vast cast of characters, but these four are more than up for it. Fresh off Broadway productions of Mary Poppins and The Book of Mormon respectively, native Floridians Ashley Brown and Michael James Scott join Tony-nominee Josh Young and Wicked’s Julia Murney for this special one-time event. Another Broadway talent, Godspell’s Daniel Goldstein, sits in as director, and the whole production benefits rising stars with proceeds going to the Chamber of Commerce’s Arts Fund.
