Sun Ra Arkestra

  • The founder: the late jazz iconoclast Sun Ra, whose music paired wild experimentation with showy costumes and cosmic mythology that looked simultaneously toward Egypt and science fiction
  • Where he’s from: according to Ra, another planet; according to historians, Birmingham, Alabama
  • The Arkestra: the band he formed in the 1950s, which continues his legacy to this day
  • Who leads the band now: saxophonist Marshall Allen, a member of the Arkestra since the ’50s and one of the first jazz musicians to meld the avant-garde with traditional African music
  • The other instruments Marshall plays: flute, clarinet, oboe, kora, and EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument)
  • When Allen’s not playing with the Arkestra: he’s collaborating with musicians as diverse as Digable Planets, Sonic Youth, and Phish; sometimes he might be sleeping
  • The setlists: blend classic Sun Ra compositions and arrangements with some of Marshall Allen’s own material influenced by the late bandleader
