Symphony Arlington breathes life into Mahler’s First as well as Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier Waltz Sequence No. 1
The Deal
- $18 for one ticket for Section A seating (up to $36.50 value)
The Program
- Mahler—Symphony No. 1: Tone poem, Titan, five movements, four movements—turns joyful and stormy, Mahler’s First Symphony has cycled through a few names and structures, all the while evoking the sounds of nature in all its entirety and incorporating dramatic folk dance melodies. Still, its appeal endures, with klezmer, street music, and even satire coloring its multifaceted sound.
- Richard Strauss—Der Rosenkavalier Waltz Sequence No. 1: A far cry from his other challenging, expressionistic operas, Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier weaves a lighthearted tale of a youthful love triangle between the aristocratic Marschallin, Count Octavian Rofrano and Sophie von Faninal, the daughter of a rich bourgeois. Highlights of the orchestral suite include the sweeping moment when the lovers first meet and a grand waltz scoring the exchange of their first texts.
