Musical of Musicals (The Musical!)

One basic story gets five exuberant retellings in Joanne Bogart and Eric Rockwell’s Musical of Musicals (The Musical!), each a goofy homage to a different master of the genre. Protagonist June can’t make rent, and if her dashing paramour or her matronly older pal can’t rescue her, her dastardly landlord is going to throw her out on the street. This yarn mutates to hilarious effect depending on which composer’s style the playwrights are cribbing: a dream ballet in a cornfield anchors the Rodgers and Hammerstein version, neurotic New Yorkers disclose their dark yearnings Sondheim-style, and the landlord skulks phantasmically through a pop opera in the Andrew Lloyd Webber mode. A flexible cast of four takes on every hat, harmony, and feather boa in the show. The original production debuted off-Broadway in 2003 to lively acclaim—the New York Times review called it “great fun,” noting that “musical theater fans will get every one of Ms. Bogart’s verbal games and Mr. Rockwell’s musical ones.”<p>
