On 230 acres of idyllic farmland, Linganore Winecellars’ passionate owners harness traditional German-Swiss and Italian winemaking techniques to create flavorful grape, fruit, and specialty wines. During holiday wine and dessert tastings, sommeliers in training receive access to the winery’s complete wine selection, including dry whites such as the soft, crisp White Raven pinot grigio and the full-bodied red chambourcin, bottled at the estate. Sweeter sips can be found among fresh raspberries, peaches, plums, and blueberries that take bottle form in semisweet fruit wines. Eclectic preparation methods and ingredients imbue unique flavors into the winery’s specialty varietals, such as spiced-apple wine made with cloves and Western Maryland apples, or the bold Spicy Regatta, both of which enlighten tongues either chilled or heated.
Guests pair sips with bites of five fresh-baked desserts such as the spiced european-almond cookie, chocolate-mousse cup, raspberry-wine bar, raspberry-and-almond petit four, and rustic-apple tart. After testing the prism-making abilities of take-home signature glasses, guests meander through the winery’s sprawling, rolling hills during a free tour that stops at a 19th-century dairy barn and crisscrosses more than 40 acres of vineyards. Each month brings a new pairing theme, such as December’s “Desserts in the Cellar” and January’s “Live, Eat, and Buy Locally,” which showcases local cheese, meat, and produce. Like the passing of a love letter from Charles Darwin to his favorite finch, Linganore’s winery is fully powered by wind. Call ahead to make a reservation.
On February 1, 2011, Linganore Winecellars' staff members celebrated with a barrel tasting. They had just finalized the winery's transition to operating on strictly sustainable wind power.
Founded in 1971 by the Aellen family, Linganore has since expanded in every way, from its grape selection to new bottling rooms to a renovation of the offices in the 19th-century barn on the grounds. Today, the sustainable winery stocks more wines than ever before, with its award-winning selection including traditional grape varietals, fruit wines, and specialty bottles. The idyllic winery routinely hosts events as well, with concerts, tastings, and tours taking place 361 days out of the year, granting the grapes four days to just hang out.
