About Kaktus Brewing Co.
Kaktus Brewing Co. does things a little differently than other New Mexican breweries. For starters, its beer eschews the high hops and high alcohol content many New Mexican microbreweries are known for in favor of complex, crisp lagers and flavorful session beers with low alcohol content. Its owner, Dana Koller, even imported equipment from Germany in an effort to craft true European-style brews. And Kaktus's food isn't your run-of-the-mill pub food but a mixture of sausages made from Colorado game meats, Frito pies loaded with ground buffalo, and creative pizzas topped with pumpkin squash and goat cheese.
But the atmosphere is what really makes Kaktus stand out more than a snow owl vacationing in Hawaii. The quirky Bernalillo location has cheeky chair backs shaped like Breaking Bad's Heisenberg and Jesse, as well as a dusty patio strewn with bric-a-brac. Blue chairs hang from tree branches and an oversized galvanized-metal tub has been transformed into a fountain with plants growing inside of it. The Albuquerque location is a little less eccentric, but it does feature a rooftop patio overlooking the mountains.
