La Farine Bakery Cafe
If a time traveler arrived in La Farine Bakery Cafe, she'd be hard-pressed to figure out what year it is. Certain touches evoke the 21st century, like the avocado-lemon and cointreau-and-OJ macarons. Others hail from the long-gone past, like the old-world recipes the bakers use for the breads, such as the French country miche, made with sourdough starter, molasses, and organic whole wheat and rye flours.
Though her bakery is decidedly modern at heart, owner Rida Shahin has a passion for classic breads. When she isn't busy designing sculptural desserts and exotic coconut mousse cakes, you'll find her baking loaves with all-natural yeasts, and bakes in a stone-hearth oven imported from Europe. The crusty results make excellent sandwiches, which diners can order in the cafe along with espresso drinks, steamy lattes, and an impressive array of croissants and other pastries.
