A movie theater is like a middle-school dance: the lights are dim, there’s not much talking, and it’s an acceptable place to cry in public. All specific dates, times, and locations of the festival’s events will be finalized and posted in mid-May.

In June, the inaugural Oak Cliff Film Festival beckons the undivided attention of silver-screen fanatics with roughly 38 cinematic events spotlighting 80 diverse independent films, which the Dallas Observer describes as the “weird stuff…and plenty of stuff homegrown.” The celebration of courageous, innovative movie making kicks off with an opening-night party at the Texas Theatre and an after-party with live music at The Foundry. When the projectors start rolling, audiences can fix their eyes on a lineup of Texas premieres, such as the rockabilly sci-fi romp The Ghastly Love of Johnny X, and the DIY homage to Jean-Claude Van Damme, Your Brother. Remember?, which Slant Magazine billed as “something like a work of genius.” The cast and crew of the early Renée Zellweger vehicle Love and a .45 will be in attendance for the 18th anniversary of the Dallas-shot film, and a live musical score soundtracks F.W. Murnau’s Sunrise, a classic silent film from 1927. Animation fans can catch a screening of Wes Anderson’s The Fantastic Mr. Fox in the family-friendly environs of the Dallas Zoo.

Having just announced the event last fall, Oak Cliff Film Festival’s organizers have already received a wealth of warm support from the local community. Various businesses have partnered with the fest to bring the gathering to life, including New Belgium Brewing Co. and the official sponsor of film critics worldwide—the opposable thumb.
