About Phillip Nearing School of Wing Chun

What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition? The Philip Nearing School of Wing Chun offers professional instruction in Ip Man's Wing Chun and practical, street-oriented self defense. We have a direct lineage to the source of the art and students will get personalized instruction from a staff of highly qualified instructors.

What was the inspiration to start or run this business? I opened my school in 1989 after working as a full time instructor at the first Wing Chun school in Chicago for 5 years. It's a great pleasure to both practice an art that I love every day and to share this art with those who come to learn it.

What do you love most about your job? I have the best job in the world. I spend every day practicing a beautiful martial art in the company of people I enjoy. The most satisfying thing to me is to see people improve both their skills and their lives through the practice of martial arts, specifically Wing Chun.

What is the best reaction you've ever gotten from a customer? There have been many wonderful reactions to the instruction in my gym but perhaps the best was having a young man turn to me and tell me that through studying Wing Chun he had learned that it is possible to turn a weakness into a strength. Things that we do not do well at first can, with practice and perseverance, become our strongest qualities. He felt that this was applicable in every area in his life.
