Rachel Rettman draws upon her personal background and experience to help students of all levels build core strength, gain cardiovascular benefits, and improve range of motion with high-intensity Pilates sessions. Mat classes find groups of around 10 fitness-seekers flexing and extending limbs throughout a quickly paced series of controlled floor exercises. Alternatively, Reformer classes invite no more than four trainees to strap into the time-tested apparatus, whose adjustable pulleys, springs, and steam-powered propellers strengthen core muscles and stretch out limbs. During private lessons, Rachel will spend 60 minutes teaching students how to best use such equipment as the Cadillac and the Wunda chair while she doles out individualized advice for improving technique. Classes convene in a 1,100-square-foot studio furnished with glossy wood floors, full-length mirrors, a breezy bay window, and bathrooms with changing facilities.
