Besides a pottery wheel, the easiest way to manipulate clay is to threaten to rebury it in the dark, sandy hole where you found it. Make sure clay turns to putty in your hands with today’s Groupon to Red Star Studios. Choose from the following options:
- For $10, you get two drop-in classes, held on Sundays from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. (a $20 value).
- For $36, you get a three-class course for a child age 7–12 or teen age 13–17 (a $75 value).
- For $82, you get a six-week adult course (a $180 value).
The next adult and children’s courses start January 14.
Inside Red Star Studios’ studio, a troupe of talented instructors guides students of all ages and skill levels through the fundamentals of functional and sculptural ceramics crafting. On Sundays, adults and nonadults partake in drop-in classes, where one of Red Star’s resident artists helps pairs of friends, parents and kids, or goldfish and their owners to create a ceramic magnum opus. A three-class child or teen course delves even deeper into the mysteries of pottery making, enlightening young artists on how to wield a potter’s wheel, master hand-building techniques, and decorate their pieces.
Grownups glean the intricacies of four different aspects of claywork during Red Star’s six-week adult sessions. Among the diverse array of skills honed during the classes are hand-building jewelry, figure building, and slip and glaze decorations. Pupils learn to tackle enormous sculptures as well, and the workshops instill students with the importance of experimentation and rebelliously long hair for artists.
Though not included with today’s Groupon, Red Star Studio’s Members’ Ceramics sale on December 3 and 4 offers its sizable stock of ceramics in time for the New Year’s tradition of ceramics-eating.
