The Issue: Bullying and Childhood Obesity
Bullying can have a devastating impact on young people, with long-term effects ranging from loss of self-esteem and isolation to health problems and suicide, according to the National Crime Prevention Council. While children become targets for bullying for many different reasons, they're often singled out because of a perceived difference between them and their peers. Research from the University of Michigan indicates that overweight youth, for example, run a much higher risk of becoming targets than their peers.
The Campaign: Enrolling Students in Anti-Bullying Class
All donations to this Grassroots campaign will be used by Speak to Me to enroll students in its Steps Against Bullying program. Every $6 donation allows Speak to Me to enroll one student in the program; for every $168 raised, Speak to Me can enroll 56 students. Situations the Game will match donations up to $250.
Steps Against Bullying addresses the issues of bullying and childhood obesity at the same time. This year's campaign will begin on September 4, during National Childhood Obesity Month, and will end eight weeks later during National Anti-Bullying Month. Students will work as individuals and in teams, each participant striving to rack up the most steps, measured by a pedometer (or speedometer for wheelchair-bound participants). Those with the most steps will receive a special award at the end of the program, during an interactive anti-bullying showcase. All students are given healthy food and activity suggestions to encourage long-term fitness and respectful lifestyles.
