The Asheville Municipal Golf Course is one of the oldest golf courses in Western North Carolina. The 18-hole golf course designed by Hall of Fame golf architect Donald Ross opened for play in 1927. As in all of Ross’s courses, it was designed to be challenging as well as fun. The par 36 front nine, measuring 3,246 yards from the back tees, features a flat, wide-open course allowing the use of a driver on every hole. The course is open daily to the general public, weather permitting. Tee times are required. Rental clubs are available. The clubhouse features a pro shop and a concession area. Passholder Tags are available for individuals, families, juniors and seniors.
First opened for play in 1899, then redesigned in 1923 by master golf course architect Donald Ross, the 6,700 yard, par 70 layout is a shotmaker’s challenge with emphasis on accuracy rather than power. From beneath the crest of Sunset Mountain, the players’ ascent from the level front nine to the gentle slopes of the back nine offer spectacular views. This course is immaculately maintained and is considered one of the finest conditioned courses in Western North Carolina.Traditions of the Course: As early as 1919, British golfing greats Harry Vardon and Ted Ray made summer stops to play exhibition matches here. Since then, the greatest golfers of their era have enjoyed the course, from the immortal Bobby Jones (through two decades as a PGA Tour stop) to players such as Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead and Byron Nelson. Recent exhibitions have featured PGA stars Doug Sanders, Gene Littler, Fuzzy Zoeller and Chip Beck.

We designed this trip all around what it means to live in the mountains during the summer: swimming holes and beer! We start this trip in the mid morning, after the day has had a chance to get nice and warm. We will drive out of town on the spectacular Blue Ridge Parkway to one of the most incredible swimming holes in the area. We will have a short hike to this top secret swimming hole that is known by few. The seclusion of this spot allows us plenty of quiet space to spread out and take in the cool mountain water under the hot sun. Once we have finished baking on the warm rocks along the bank, we will take the short and scenic hike back to our transportation. After winding through the Blue Ridge Parkway one last time, we will conclude at New Belgium Brewery, located right along the banks of the French Broad River where we can soak up the eclectic River Arts district and round out the perfect Asheville day with a beer.
