  • Tampa Capoeira
Eduardo Torres’s interest for capoeira began in his teens, but it wasn't until he traveled from Northern California to Florida that he discovered his passion for teaching the Afro-Brazilian sport. After extensive training, Eduardo earned the title of Professor Girino and became a member of Grupo Maculelê. Tucking that experience into his back pocket, Eduardo now leads four Tampa Capoeira studios across the Greater Tampa Bay Area. At those studios, Professor Girino and his savvy staff teach the ways of capoeira to students of all ages and skill levels, and they have even trained Major League Baseball catcher Russell Martin. During classes, students form a traditional roda, or circle, as they learn everything from the rhythmic chants that keep fighters on beat to the fluid, acrobatic movements that send their bodies spinning across a mat. Professor Girino also points out that capoeira is not about fighting but rather anticipating the opponent's next move, much like playing chess against a short-tempered orangutan.

Physical activity from playing video games can help improve children's cardiovascular and overall health, as well as keep kids happy and entertained during hospital stays for cancer treatments. Cure on Wheels's goal is to purchase a gaming system for each room on All Children's Hospital's oncology floor, which has about 100 rooms. Until the organization can raise enough funds to purchase all 100 systems, single gaming systems will be placed on carts so they can be wheeled from room to room.

  • Tampa Bay Times
The Tampa Bay Times traces its origins to the backroom of a pharmacy in 1884, when the bay area was a sleepy backwater. In those days, only 480 people read the four-page journal. But over the course of the next 50 years, cadres of plucky, adventurous businessmen, including W. L. Straub and Paul Poynter, oversaw an unprecedented expansion in the newspaper?s circulation and prestige as they promoted the region?s booming growth in business and population. Paul?s son, Nelson Poynter, took over as editor in 1939, establishing a reputation for journalistic integrity that led admirers to revere him as a patriot and genius and detractors to denounce him as a muckraker, a communist, or a delirious sleepwalker. Readers of the Tampa Bay Times witness Nelson Poynter?s legacy for sober, detailed analysis in the pages of today?s publication, which has claimed ten Pulitzer Prizes?including one in 2014, one in 2013, and two won in 2009, one of which was awarded to its nationally renowned PolitiFact.com fact-checking operation.
