Sheffield Place doesn't just shelter people—it addresses the underlying trauma that can upend a person's life. Mothers with infants and children up to age 12 come to Sheffield Place to find a long-term place to live and transition out of the cycle of homelessness. Each family moves into a two-room living unit with a private bath in a building with 14 units. They share kitchen and laundry rooms with their floor's other residents and remain in the apartment for two years until they can gain self-sufficiency. To help families rebuild their lives, Sheffield Place offers trauma-informed care and primary health care, which cater to both the mental-health needs and the physical wellness of the women and children. Residents can attend onsite therapy sessions to help them cope with trauma, substance abuse, and the struggles of independent living.
