At Double Apple, Mahmoud “Joe” Migdadi applies his culinary sensibilities to Mediterranean, Indian, and classic American dishes, crafting lamb with tzatziki sauce as well as dinosaur-shaped chicken nuggets for kids. Nine types of shawarma, homemade chickpea hummus, and original smoothies stand out among the Mediterranean choices, which The Roanoke Times calls "flavorful" and "healthy." The dining room, which is divided into cozy compartments, surrounds guests with Middle Eastern décor that continues into the upper level's hookah café. There, a separate ventilation system filters smoke from hookahs loaded with fruit flavors such as grape mint and margarita, which are available with or without tobacco and wish-granting genies.
Energetic live music pulsates across the spacious quarters of Growler’s American Grill and Venue—once known as Awful Arthur’s Towers—as barkeeps fill mugs and growlers with local pale and brown ales, porters, and a slew of bottled favorites. Platefuls of hearty American and Southern favorites, from meatloaf sandwiches to fish 'n' chips, energize diners to take the stage for a round of karaoke, with the background music supplied by a DJ, live band, or brownnosing date.
At Big Shotz Tavern, chefs celebrate American comfort food with a vast menu of pizzas, burgers, and barbecue. They season and marinate chicken wings in homemade rubs, and whip up sauces and dips from scratch.
A bustling, lively atmosphere prevails in the spacious dining room. Big-screen TVs hover above the wraparound bar, and, in the warmer months, musicians serenade adorable diners with spinach in their teeth on the outdoor brick patio. The restaurant also hosts a weekly trivia night.

For 23 years, the manager of Break Time Billiards & Sports Bar has been surrounded by the murmurs of friendly chatter and clacking of pool balls that define a billiard room. But unlike the style of a traditional billiard room, his serves hearty Italian-American fare from local landmark Carmine's Restaurant for groups to enjoy while they play. It would seem there are surprises around every corner, because far from simply providing billiards, the fully equipped, smoke-free establishment also boasts dart lanes, electronic games, and a constant stream of sports broadcast on the myriad big-screen televisions.
For all its extras, however, Break Time Billiards & Sports Bar still has the feeling of a classic, upscale billiard room. Designed by avid players and sports enthusiasts, the layout leaves plenty of room between its Diamond professional tables to prevent annoying collisions.
The vibrant blues, greens, reds, and yellows of The Oasis Cafe's exterior reflect the playful, casual vibe of the outdoor eatery's staff and menu. In the fresh air, bands take to the stage, and DJs spin tunes that send the locals into fits of spontaneous fist-pumping and working up their nerve to ask one of the potted palms for its digits. To complement the comfort fare—cheesesteaks, house-made burgers, wings, and hand-cut fries—bartenders pour frosty drafts or pop the tops off a selection of bottled brews.
