Cirque de Vol Studios
It's Wednesday night in Pullen Park, and a crowd is gathering around Carolyn Mabry. Scattered on the lawn around her are multicolored hula hoops in a slew of sizes. Folks have come to learn to hoop from the woman who the News & Observer called "North Carolina's 'Queen of the Hoop'" during her weekly free class. Mabry is a true hula-hoop evangelist. When she's not leading outdoor sessions, she's spreading the word during her lessons for the Governor Morehead School for the Blind or in her programs for the Boys and Girls Club. And while there are plenty of people who enjoy hula-hoops, the fact that Mabry sets hers on fire makes her a perfect fit for Cirque de Vol Studios.
Here, she and her fellow instructors seamlessly blend the high-flown spectacle of the circus with the fun, but physically demanding workouts needed to pull off those stunts. Cirque de Vol Studios offers an array of classes, from Aerial Boot Camp, Hoop Dance, and Hand Balancing to Acro Play Yoga, Zumba, and Meditation. In aerial-silks classes, for example, they teach students gravity-defying maneuvers, which also build core strength, grace, and physical endurance. For a pure circus experience, they lead fire-dance and safety certification courses, in which students master the flow fundamentals before choreographing routines with live flames or undead flames on Halloween. Even kids can get in on the carnivalesque action with birthday parties, camps, and aerial classes.
