Despite the alluring properties of open flames, only glass, custom masonry, and middle-school diaries benefit from being thrust into them. Give your windows new flare with today’s Groupon: for $70, you get a six-week stained-glass class at Art Glass and More in Homewood (a $145 total value). The class package includes:
- Six three-hour class sessions (an $85 value)
- A six-week tool rental (a $30 value)
- Glass and materials for a take-home 12”x14” stained-glass panel (a $30 value)<p>
Art Glass and More leads nimble fingers through the process of stained-glass design with six goal-oriented sessions that teach students how to create one of nine available patterns for a 12”x14” glass panel. In the first session, students will practice tracing patterns, cutting, and coloring glass. The second, third, and fourth sessions will introduce grinding and fitting glass into the panels and applying copper foils to the edges. The fifth and sixth sessions will teach solder and framing techniques to contain each creative masterpiece, before students wrap up projects with a layer of patina and delicate cleaning to heighten color, shine, and snowball-repelling powers.
Patrons can schedule each three-hour session during any of the shop’s open hours, completing their project at their own paces. Glass painters can also choose to create larger panels or purchase extra glass ($20–$30), bevel clusters ($17.50–$27), and borders ($22) to make their own designs or fill their homes with life-size glass portraits of their coworkers.
