After swaddling patients with a protective plate and flame-resistant cloth to shelter the face and hair, the technician lights the candle, which is made from unbleached cotton fabric coated with purified paraffin or beeswax, creating a vacuum that draws out inner-ear excess and nesting sparrows. Patients may lie down, relax, or curl-up on top of a piano as the candle gently goes to work.
