The Fine Print

100% of donations go directly to Compass Family Services. All donations matched up to $1,000 by Mehran Esmaili. Donations are automatically applied. Must provide full name at checkout. See Grassroots FAQs that apply to this campaign. Merchant is solely responsible to purchasers for the care and quality of the advertised goods and services.

The Issue: Lack of Resources for Holiday Celebrations

When displaced San Francisco families need to focus their financial resources on finding a place to sleep and food to eat, holidays are often overlooked. Youth experiencing homelessness face an unusual amount of stress and may feel excluded from the childhood traditions enjoyed by many of their peers. Participating in fun activities such as trick-or-treating with other children their age can help add a layer of stability and happiness to their lives, giving them the chance to become someone else for the evening, use their imaginations, and create joyful memories with their friends.

The Campaign: Providing Halloween Costumes to Youth

If this Grassroots campaign raises $300, then Compass Family Services can provide Halloween costumes to 40 youth from low-income backgrounds who participate in Compass programs, thanks to matching donations from Mehran Esmaili of ShoeBiz SF. Donations will be matched up to $1,000. Each additional $15 raised—in conjunction with the matching donation—will provide Halloween costumes to two children.

Compass sets up costume shops according to age where parents can help their child select a costume to wear during Halloween activities, such as school parties or trick-or-treating. Compass estimates that about 350–400 parents will request costumes for their children this Halloween.

All donations will be matched up to a $1,000 total by Mehran Esmaili of ShoeBiz SF.

Compass Family Services

Compass Family Services was established in 1914 under the name Travelers' Aid San Francisco to assist newcomers who were drawn to the city by the spectacle of the 1915 World's Fair. By the time it became Compass Family Services in 1995, its mission had evolved drastically to fit the city's changing needs. In that 80-year period, it had provided social services to refugees, military personnel, and transient adults. In the 1980s, it began focusing on homeless families and sought to help them attain stability, a mission that continues today.

Compass's six primary programs support more than 3,000 parents and children every year with a comprehensive array of services. Compass Connecting Point, Family Shelter, and Clara House provide people with places to live ranging from overnight stays to two-year transitional housing. Compass SF Home helps people stay in their houses with rent subsidies; the Compass Children's Center organizes child development and educational activities; and the Compass Family Resource Center works with both parents and children to ensure they maintain a strong bond and healthy relationship.
