Though the equipment that fills the gym at CrossFit A1A may look simple, each piece was chosen for its ability to mimic functional movements and whip bodies into shape. Wooden boxes facilitate plyometric exercises, ropes dangle from the ceiling for people to climb, and giant tires are flipped end over end, helping exercisers build muscle. The workouts change daily, so one day gym members may lift barbells and hold themselves up on gymnastics rings, and the next they might swing kettlebells and run with weights. They can also slow down the pace during the gym’s yoga classes, which work to twist and fold bodies into core-strengthening poses.
