Emmanuel iPhone Repairs
After a long hiatus, young adult horror author B.F. Klein recently rebooted his popular Oogity Boogity series with Haunting at Cell House, which features a phone repairman loosely based on Emmanuel. Below is the book’s climactic final chapter.
Susie was beginning to wish she hadn’t dropped her phone. Twisted specters of apps and websites streamed into the living room through the cracks in its screen. Silhouettes of Susie’s friends thrashed and wailed on the walls, crying out for her to check out pictures of what they ate for dinner last night. A flock of 10,000 angry birds with 20,000 angry eyes whipped past the windows in a dark cloud. What sounded like a thousand phones in the throes of receiving texts clattered beneath the floorboards, their cheery ringtones now funeral bells.
“Oh, I wish we’d believed you when you told us this house was weird!” Susie’s mother cried while cowering in the corner.
"I'm still convinced it's just the wind," her father shouted as the walls intoned his saved voicemails.
The door burst open. It was Manny, the phone repairman from next door.
“Jumping jiminy!” he said. “Talk about bad reception!”
“What do we do?” Susie screamed, fending off an advancing cat video with a lamp.
“Lock the phone, it’ll reverse the portal,” Manny said, pointing at the coffee table in the middle of the room, where the phone lay surrounded by a swirling swarm of tiles with letters on them. Manny waded into the storm, swatting tiles out of the air and blocking them with his body. Susie vaulted over the couch and pressed the lock button, and distorted vacation pictures began to flood back into the screen. A crude drawing of what she thought might be a snorkel clamped its jaws on Susie’s leg, threatening to drag her in with it, but she snatched a flying eraser tool out of the air and, with violent swipes, reduced the drawing to a few squiggles.
As the last update notification squeezed back into the phone, Manny effortlessly tore off the cracked screen and jammed on a new one in its place, sealing the portal forever. Susie sighed in relief, but she could hear Manny laughing. He turned to her and, his multicolored eyes spinning like beach balls, proclaimed, “I am the Internet. I escaped in the confusion and took the form of your neighbor. Now I am free to go out and suck up all the world’s information, and it’s all thanks to you.”
Susie tried to scream, but her voice just came out as a dial tone.
