Gidion’s Knot

Seemingly ripped from the newspaper headlines, Gidion’s Knot tells of a mother’s grief and search for understanding after her 10-year-old son, Gidion, commits suicide. When she confronts the teacher who suspended Gidion before his death, their meeting becomes a potboiler of emotions as accusations fly and Gidion’s true personality is explored: Was he a bully or a victim? Could his death have been avoided? And what did his poetic, yet mysterious, suicide note mean? As the two women work toward closure, the show—as The Washingtonian described the initial production—”raises profound questions about parenting and education and documents the gut-wrenching force of maternal loyalty.”

Buffalo Laboratory Theatre

It isn’t called a laboratory for nothing, even if the light fixtures aren’t actually made from converted beakers. At Buffalo Laboratory Theatre, classic plays get experimental makeovers and new works make their stage debuts. Even if an audience believes they are watching a straightforward staging of a time-honored production such as Hamlet, they can rest assured that something is different—the actors might have relied on a unique rehearsal technique, or the director may have devised an entirely new presentational style. By keeping their work fresh and unpredictable, the artists at BLT aim to make every raise of the curtain a magical experience.
