Charles Dickens Performs A Christmas Carol
In Charles Dickens’s timeless Yuletide ghost story, an inveterate miser discovers there is more to the holiday season than making up words such as “humbug.” It’s Christmas Eve, and Ebenezer Scrooge thinks his sole concession to the spirit of generosity—grudgingly giving his long-suffering clerk Bob Cratchit tomorrow off with pay—will be the day’s only unpleasant event. But that’s before the shade of his deceased partner, Jacob Marley, drops by wearing a preview of the chains Scrooge himself has forged through a lifetime of greed, and before the spirits of three ghosts reveal the isolating consequences of Scrooge’s greed. Like most high-school calculus tests, it all ends up being a dream, giving Scrooge one last chance to redeem himself and save Tiny Tim.
Although most remember Charles Dickens as an author and social critic, he was also quite the gifted performer. In fact, after the publication of A Christmas Carol in 1843, he toured the world delivering theatrical readings to audiences lucky enough to hear the Dickensian wordplay straight from his Dickensian mouth. Although those moments can’t be fully replicated—blame the advancement of time and the curing of typhoid—the next best thing arrives with this one-man production of A Christmas Carol. Performing as Charles Dickens, actor Travis Rhett Wilson embodies the roles of all the story’s beloved characters, lending the oft-told tale an intimacy that makes it feel brand new.
