Inside the Music with Andrew Grams
Part music lesson, part performance, Inside the Music joins Music Director Andrew Grams and the ESO in an informal 90-minute exploration of a masterwork. Using visual aids and musical excerpts, Grams explains the history and form of the piece before the orchestra performs it in all its glory following intermission. A casual evening that’s shorter than a regular concert, the event is preceded by a reception with complimentary appetizers starting at 7 p.m.
Stravinsky—Petrushka (1947 Revision): One of the five—yes, five—versions of Stravinsky’s colorful ballet, the 1947 Petrushka, adapted from Russian folk puppetry, concerns a puppet brought to life by a character known as The Magician. The music features dazzling arpeggios and tumultuous trumpet fanfares that thrill audiences, as well as the famous “Petrushka” chord. Petrushka is described by Russian musicologist Richard Taruskin to be where “Stravinsky at last became Stravinsky.”
