What You'll Do
Though they use it on a daily basis, most people put little thought into their soap. In this class, Lauren Barnes champions the qualities of homemade, paraben- and chemical-free soap as she walks you through the process of crafting bars. Under her guidance, you'll mix up a custom soap recipe, then observe the stages of saponification as the blend cooks in a crockpot.
Learn the basics of soap-making as you create a custom recipe, and how ingredients affect qualities such as fragrance, exfoliation, and moisturizing.
Homemade Bar of Soap
Lauren will cut and mail the bars to participants a week following the class, after the soap has had time to cure.
Participants should wear closed-toed shoes and bring safety goggles, if they own them.
Co-Owner of Redbeard Brewbars
Though her background is in creative writing, Lauren Barnes turned her artistic skills to another trade in 2013: crafting homemade soap. She and her husband, Zeb, left steady jobs behind to follow their twin passions—soap and beer—and spend more time with their family. They founded Redbeard Brew Bars and began hand-crafting bars of soap from home-brewed beer. Lauren only uses clean, eco-friendly ingredients in her bars (never parabens or harsh chemicals), and she teaches the students in her classes to do the same.
