The Devil, The Witch, and The Blacksmith
‘Tis the night before Christmas in the small Ukrainian village of Dikanka and the air is full of the smells of hot food, the sounds of carols, the slosh of beer, and—in the case of the town’s blacksmith, Vakula—love for the beautiful, conceited Oksana. Unfortunately, Vakula has been making a fool of a rather bad enemy to have… The Devil. In revenge, Old Scratch plans to stymie Vakula’s romance by stealing the moon and unleashing a blinding snowstorm. Luckily, Vakula has some allies, too. Vakula’s mother—a witch and, ahem, “healer” to half the town’s menfolk—and Oksana’s rich Cossack daddy soon get involved, adding even more merry mischief to the action.
Ninety minutes of magic and farce (plus a couple comically adult situations guaranteed to fly right over the kids’ heads), this family-friendly adaptation of Nikolai Gogol’s short story is both a refreshing break from the season’s abundance of nutcrackers and a worthy addition to any family’s holiday traditions.
