A Map of the Soul: The Tricky Part (November 1–17)

In part one of his harrowing autobiographical series of one-man shows, Obie Award–winning actor Martin Moran engulfs audiences in the dark memories of a troubled past. In what The New York Times Ben Brantley calls “a wrenching rite of passage,” the story details Martin’s youth as a 12-year old at a Catholic boys’ camp, where he’s seduced into a sexual relationship with a 30-year-old counselor. The damage gives way to a tale of transformation and redemption, which Angels in America author Tony Kushner hails as “fully human, unsettling, and wise.” Upon it’s debut, the play scored two Drama Desk nominations, including one for “Best Play,” and its novelization landed a Lambda Literary Award and a Barnes and Nobel Discover Prize.

A Map of the Soul: All the Rage (November 3–17)

After the initial success of The Tricky Part, audiences wondered why Martin Moran’s memoir wasn’t dripping with fury and warranted vitriol. It made Moran ponder the same thing, and All the Rage chronicles his quest for understanding and closure. In the 2013 Lucille Lortel Award–winning sequel, Martin embarks on a spiritual quest that takes him from Manhattan to the south of Johannesburg. The people he encounters along the way—his estranged stepmother, a guide who can’t read maps, and an African refugee seeking asylum in the US—underlie the distance between anger and compassion. Sharing its predecessor’s success with the critics, The New York Times proclaimed All the Rage “leads you into thought and emotion-stirring territory that you don’t often visit at the theater.”

To encourage conversation and engagement with the themes and ideas of A Map of the Soul, Two River is hosting post-play conversations following every performance.
