The staff of professionals and volunteers at Miriam's Kitchen combats chronic homelessness in the Washington, DC area by offering a range of support services from meals to life-skills classes. Because individuals experiencing chronic homelessness often face special challenges to self-sufficiency such as physical or mental disabilities, Miriam's Kitchen provides its guests with the opportunity, entirely at their discretion, to meet with a staff of social workers and therapists that can assist them in achieving a variety of goals.
Case-management services at Miriam's Kitchen assist nearly 3,500 men and women experiencing homelessness each year. Services may be as simple as providing clean clothing, or may require multiple visits, such as obtaining identification cards that allow access to work and housing. An art therapist and a psychiatrist are also on staff to provide mental health care for guests in need, and the Miriam's Kitchen staff also helps individuals seeking stable housing.
