Some of the coaches might argue that the real boss at Kodiak CrossFit is the clock. Mounted on the wall, the clock times each workout of the day, or WOD, providing guests with a competitive benchmark for their progress. Still, the environment in the gym is anything but oppressive—coaches and fellow participants egg one another on during class, encouraging everyone to finish that last deadlift, pull-up, burpee, or medicine-ball sized jawbreaker. And though the staff might be "borderline obsessive" about CrossFit, it's only because they've experienced its effects firsthand, having started from the same place as many of their current students.
