Lakeside Prospect Park
You might be surprised to find back-to-nature basics such as 250 species of birds, 30,000 interlinked trees, and a manmade lake smack in the middle of Brooklyn. But Prospect Park's 585 acres offer all that, and still fit in a full menu of outdoor activities for the whole family. During the summer, visitors can take advantage of free music and dance during the Celebrate Brooklyn! performing arts festival. Or take a more historical approach and pay homage to fallen Union soldiers at the Grand Army Plaza. Drummer's Grove has been a gathering place for percussionists for more than three decades, and the more nature-inclined can meander through the Ravine—the borough's only forest.
But you don't need to be looking for a particular landmark to make the most of Prospect Park. Visitors can spend hours just wandering the park and enjoying the fresh air. From boating on the lake, to picnicking and birdwatching on the Nethermead meadow, to staring contests with the nearly 400 animals at the onsite zoo, there's enough to keep the whole family entertained.
