  • L & B Spumoni Gardens
L & B Spumoni Gardens A new arrival from Torella Di Lombardi, Italy, Ludovico Barbati first began hawking his homemade spumoni and ices from a horse-drawn wagon that he drove up and down the streets of Brooklyn. His deserts were so revered that he decided to set up permanent shop. Tapping laborers he knew from his native land, Ludovico built the first of three buildings that would become Spumoni Gardens, a family venture that eventually saw Ludovico expanding his menu to include thick, Sicilian-style pizzas that made a perfect accompaniment to his famous icy treats. Featured on Man v. Food and highlighted in the Village Voice’s list of the Best Foodie Adventures, Spumoni Gardens’ pizzas have become local lore for their crispy, square-cut crusts. The crusts owe their crispness to an unconventional layering technique: chefs lay down fresh slices of mozzarella before the sauce, creating a creamy, melted barrier that prevents the base from getting soggy. The iconic Brooklyn eatery also dishes out stuffed heroes, hearty pasta platters, and Italian entrees, and can even turn its signature spumoni into a cake to mark special occasions such as birthdays or recurring Thursdays.

  • South Fin Grill
At South Fin Grill, the ocean breeze mingles with a menu of upscale seafood and steakhouse dishes praised by New York magazine. Amid what critic Ethan Wolff describes as a "priceless" ocean view, servers roll out lobster, crab, swordfish, and salmon incarnated as pasta, soup, and sushi dishes. The "turf" portion of the menu showcases grilled new york sirloin, filet mignon, and barbecued pork, but the focus once again turns seaside at a raw bar that features clams and oysters kept fresh by pearl-shaped breath mints. Beams of blue and yellow lighting hover above the interior dining tables, each blanketed with a white tablecloth and centered with a flickering candle. Outside, the ocean deck's sea-blue umbrellas shelter views of the boardwalk, ocean, and seagull beach volleyball tourneys. The restaurant bolsters its elegantly plated cuisine with occasional entertainment acts, which have included DJs.

  • Chinar On The Island
Named for a type of plane tree with a broad, sprawling crown, Chinar on the Island shelters diners in a space designed to look like a breezy Mediterranean courtyard. Sandstone archways and clusters of palms surround diners as they tuck into appetizers, such as fresh mussels and saffron shrimp, or point out which of the clouds painted on the ceiling are shaped most like fried calamari. For the main meal, shareable kebab plates skewer grilled meats and veggies, and pilaf dishes steam tender rice with spices and vegetables in a tangine, or earthenware pot. Hearty traditional dishes, such as roast quail or lamb slow-cooked on the bone, can fill bellies or weigh down brass display vessels commandeered for impromptu rounds of shot put.

  • Victory Archers
Since 1973, archers have lined up to hone their shots at the front of Victory Archers' 12 regulation-size lanes. The arrow-slingers who line up there aren’t just a random collection of archers––though the indoor range does hold open shooting on Wednesday nights––but a community of archers drawn from leagues, lessons, and a group of members who team up not only to shoot, but also to maintain the facility. The real-world results from the community-based lessons and sans-leotard practice sessions have been impressive, as evidenced by the 17-point buck and other wild trophies that have been felled by club members.
