The original incarnation of hockey, known as hokey, consisted of one person playing against his or her self to see how many blue lines he or she could draw in concentric circles around a puck while figure skating. For inconceivable reasons, this version quickly fell by the wayside as the motion blurring, body slamming, and puck chucking of modern hockey gained ascendance. The Nailers are the AA affiliate of the Penguins. Come see the young players strut their stuff as they skate toward the big leagues. It?s like watching an episode of Before They Were Stars without knowing it. Hockey is like the magnificent mutt of the sporting world. You get the speed of basketball, the elegance of ice-skating, and the utter brutality of golf all combined in one action-packed event. Take your adrenaline-deprived librarian friend or entire cul-de-sac out for a raucous afternoon or evening of hard hits and flashing lights. Reviews The Intelligencer has covered numerous Nailers games. Here's what they say about a thrilling match against the first-place Toledo Walleye: But Wheeling jumped right back as newcomer Zack Sill won a battle for the puck and centered it to Capraro who went top shelf for his fourth to tie it 2-2 after two. It remained that way until Sill headed the puck to Casey Pierro-Zabotel, who carried it into the Toledo zone and down the left side until he nearly passed up the goal. But just as he was about to, he fed it to Capraro on the other side, and he put it into the open net.?There were some tense moments at the end including a spectacular save with 5:55 left on Ewing, who lunged and hit the puck toward and [sic] open cage. But Teslak somehow recovered in time to make the save. ? Shawn Rine

  • Adam Carolla
One of many vaudeville and movie palaces that sprung up in the 1920s, the Warner Theatre today drops jaws in much the same way it did in its infancy: with glittering chandeliers, gilded ceilings, and red-felt seats. Yet before transforming into its modern incarnation, it served as a film-only venue with such luxuries as a rooftop garden and a ballroom in the basement. The Warner even had a dance troupe akin to the Rockettes?called the Roxyettes?who would high-kick before and after the screen lit up. After falling into disarray in the '70s, the Warner became a concert venue, saving it from the wrecking ball but forcing it to require a complete renovation in 1989 to remove years of grime and stray musical notes lodged between seat cushions. At the reopening gala, a host of stars performed, including Frank Sinatra in what would prove to be his last DC show.

Nearly a century ago, the Hippodrome opened as a combination movie palace and vaudeville theater, spending more than 70 years hosting big names such as Bob Hope and Frank Sinatra. Following a double-decade period of slow business and bad hairstyles, the Hippodrome closed down in 1990. Now, however, after an exhaustive restoration project that reanimated the theater’s chandelier-lit arches, the mural above the proscenium stage, and the grand-theater boxes that hearken back to opera’s heyday, the Hippodrome reopens to the delight of Baltimore’s cultural landscape.

  • Dependable Drive-In Theatres
It was June 1, 1950 when the screens first lit up at Dependable Drive-In. And although film stars have changed over the years, the spirit of the movies has stayed as strong as it was on that long-ago summer day. Families and friends still pull into drive-in and select one of the first-run features showing on its four screens. As the action unfolds, Dolby Sound comes pulsing through the car, truck, or pumpkin carriage's own stereo system. At the snack bar, friendly staffers serve up a menu as timeless as the drive-in's old-fashioned speakers (which have been made into nostalgic clocks available for customer purchase). Hot dogs, nachos, root beer floats, and other favorites all pair perfectly with movies about alien invasions or just one 90-minute shot of Keanu Reeve looking really intense.
