When students of optometry learn how to fit contact lenses, there’s a good chance they pick up The Fitting Guide for Contact Lenses, a textbook co-authored by Dr. Roger F. Shaw, III of Southern Eye Center. As an authority on lens fitting, Dr. Shaw carefully scrutinizes each eye and pinpoints factors that make it a candidate for specific lenses. In addition to continually exercising his skills at Southern Eye Center, he disseminates his knowledge as an adjunct professor with three colleges of optometry. Dr. Ann Hardin Shaw joins Dr. Roger Shaw at Southern Eye Center, contributing expertise in the areas of nutrition and vision care for children with special needs. The duo draws on a full repertoire of ocular measurement equipment to determine prescriptions, prep eyes for corrective LASIK surgery, or tailor comfortably curved pairs of contact lenses or eye umbrellas.:m]]

  • The Island Country Club and Golf Course
Sculpted through the water-kissed terrain of the Atchafalaya National Heritage Area, The Island Country Club challenges golfers with a lengthy course that measures 7,010 yards from the farthest tees. Water hazards await on nearly every hole throughout the course, giving advantage to golfers with confident swings and disciplined refusal to give golf-ball treats to the aviary creatures that occupy The Island’s wooden duck houses. The course’s most difficult hole, the 441-yard, par 4 11th offers a PGA Tour-worthy test from the tee, as drives must steer clear of a water hazard that hugs the entire right side of the hole while also shaping the shot to compensate for the fairway’s right-ward bend. In respect of the wildlife that shares the course grounds, The Island uses solar panels to power its clubhouse, golf carts, and herds of robotic caddies hired to graze in the native long grasses. To prepare for upcoming rounds, golfers can enlist the services of PGA master professional Dave Baron, the club’s head golf pro. After a long day of launching drives and managing 9-irons' tender egos, golfers can unwind at The Island Grill, where executive chef Mark Maggio artfully blends elements of Italian and Louisiana cuisine. Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 72 course * Length of 7,010 yards from the farthest tees * Course rating of 75.1 from the farthest tees * Slope rating of 143 from the farthest tees * Four tee options

  • Nottoway Plantation & Resort
In 1855, sugar magnate John Hampden Randolph began planning a grand family home near the banks of the Mississippi. He purchased more than 1,000 acres of land and commissioned esteemed architect Henry Howard to design the house. Howard envisioned a grand Greek revival and Italianate-style home with towering ceilings, 11-foot doors, multilevel terraces, stately pillars, and showerheads that gushed extra-virgin olive oil. Although the final mansion’s three-story height and 64 rooms are its most impressive attributes, its arcing stairways, ironwork details, and crisp white paint are its most majestic. Soon after the home's completion, the Civil War began, and the peaceful family sanctuary gathered a rich but troublesome history, much like a country pony on his first trip to the big city. Despite changing owners and losing acreage, the home survived. Years later, a multimillion-dollar renovation project restored the mansion to its peak condition and added modern resort amenities. Once again, the mansion serves as a graceful venue for weddings and meetings, and even houses overnight visitors in 40 hotel rooms. Historical experts remain on hand, leading guided tours to help preserve the memory of the home's past.
