  • Museum of Arts and Sciences
A 40 million year old whale fossil. A working planetarium. Works from some of Georgia's greatest artists. It doesn't take trips to three separate museums to see all of these things. All you have to do is visit Museum of Arts and Sciences, which has been combining art, science, and humanities into a single experience for more than 55 years. Size: a full-dome planetarium, observatory, outdoor trails, and numerous exhibit halls make for the largest general purpose museum in the state Eye Catcher: visitors spinning in the human gyroscope Permanent Art Collection: a focus on Southern painters, Georgia folk pottery, and contemporary regional works Living Exhibits: the Mini Zoo houses more than 70 animals from desert, forest, and pond habitats From Space: one of three shows in the Mark Smith Planetarium Don't Miss: a walk amid the daffodils, iris, and other blooms in Mary's Garden Pro Tip: stargazers should come on clear Fridays evenings, when the observatory's team brings out their telescopes for a peek into the cosmos

  • Hay House
When Mr. and Mrs. Johnston built the Hay House between the years of 1855–1859, they modeled it after the Italian Renaissance homes they had seen while honeymooning in Europe. Much like a rooster that crows at 2 a.m., the completed project was well ahead of its time: it had indoor plumbing, a ventilation system, central heating, a French lift, and even a speaker system. Two other families—the Feltons and Hays—called "The Palace of the South" home after the Johnstons, and all three families adapted the structure to their lifestyle. Today, 20,000 people visit the house every year to marvel at its technology, architecture, and engineering, but also to learn about how the Johnstons, Feltons, and Hays combined to turn it into a gigantic piece of art. Tours through Hay House reveal the main level, bedroom level, and basement, as well as the art collection and handsome cabinetry that still inhabit its spaces.

  • Cox Capitol Theatre
When the neon curlicues above its marquee first lit up in 1916, the Capitol Theatre promised Macon residents the finest movie-going experience available, with cozy leather seats and a gold-fiber screen. After shutting down in 1976, the theater languished for 30 years, suffering from water damage and neglect until renovation began in 2003, restoring the space to its former glory. Brass-banisters encircle the wrap-around balconies above the venue’s open floor, dotted with cabaret-style tables and seats occupied by frugal 1920s ghosts still trying to get their 15-cents worth from their original admission.
