  • Valley Ranch Acupuncture
When it comes to the integration of Eastern and Western medicine, Dr. Carlos Chapa might as well be the poster child. He spent nearly a decade learning and practicing Western medicine, first as a medic in the U.S. Marines, then as a civilian paramedic. When he took a sabbatical from his budding medical career to study abroad in China, Dr. Chapa's early interest in natural cures?stemming from visits to his grandmother's small town in Mexico, where she acted as the town healer?took root in the form of Traditional Chinese Medicine. He delved head-first into this new passion, earning his master's degree and then his PhD in Oriental Medicine from Dongguk University in South Korea, which led him to study at one of the world's first hospitals that integrated Eastern and Western principles. Today, Dr. Chapa brings this integrative approach to clients at Valley Ranch Acupuncture. As a licensed acupuncturist who has treated thousands of patients, he uses this 5,000 year old technique to decrease pain, boost energy, and affect hormone levels in clients, all with the aim of treating the root cause of the issues and not only focusing only on the symptoms. True to his forward-thinking style, Dr. Chapa may even swap out the hair-thin, virtually painless acupuncture needles for a laser. The low-energy beam is used to target the same locations and produce the same results as acupuncture needles, but require no penetration of the skin.

  • Railway City Brewing Company
Inspired by the dramatic life of Jumbo, the P.T. Barnum circus elephant, Railway City emblazons every growler of its Dead Elephant IPA with a bold-faced reminder to "live life large." Railway City embodies that motto daily as staff turns Ontario-grown grains and hops into small-batch craft beers. Besides regular brews such as the Dead Elephant IPA and the Iron Spike blond ale, the company also concocts monthly seasonal beers, such as the Cranberry Pilsner and Honey Elixir, which is only made after local bees call to say their honey has hit its peak flavour. To retain optimal character in each batch by sourcing as many local ingredients as possible in small batch brews, Railway City never dulls robustness through pasteurization. These uncompromising standards complement its environmentally sustainable practices, such as dispensing refillable glass growlers and donating their spent grains to local farmers for feed. An online directory lets fans know where to enjoy Railway's brews, and also share some of their favourite recipes that pair well with their beers.

  • St Thomas Golf Course
The Bogey Golf Tour grants golfers a chance to take to the links and compete against fellow amateurs in tournaments scheduled at some of the finest courses in the London, Windsor, Detroit, and Kitchener/Waterloo areas. At each event, scratch golfers compete in the Birdie division, 0–15 handicaps square off in the Par division, and 16+ handicappers trade pinpoint approaches and sequined divot tools in the Bogey division. The top five finishers in each division receive prize money—which can be paid out in gift certificates or cash—and the Tour also holds prize competitions for longest drive, closest to the pin, and 3-iron jousting. The Tour publishes the results from each tournament in local newspapers, and players can chart the peaks and valleys of their careers on the Tour Members list, which compiles all of their tournament results. Along with providing an outlet for amateur golfers to exercise their long-suppressed competitive side, the Tour and its sponsors have raised $74,000 for various area charities since 2003.

  • Body Wraps By Pam
Pam Clay won?t wrap clients in a body-wrap formula she hasn?t already tried on herself. After testing each formula extensively, the founder of Body Wraps By Pam, with its new location in Powell off Sawmill Road, drapes men and women in all-natural wraps designed to temporarily free bodies of toxins and excess inches while infusing the epidermis with deep-reaching moisture. Each wrap?s layers of gel combine vitamins and herbs to soothe skin and grant camouflage for sneaking into tea parties. Pam often uses humor to relax her clients as she seats them in gravity chairs and swaddles them in warm blankets at the start of each treatment. In Pam's new private space, she puts a particular emphasis on creating an environment worthy of her relaxing treatments. Space chairs scoot up next to an electric fireplace, and a mural depicts a beach scene, calming the nerves of anyone who has not just tried to visit a childhood sandcastle.
