  • Urban Kai
Fitness studios often work hard to cultivate a relaxing setting. They might install floor-to-ceiling windows, play soothing music, or enforce a strict policy against flash mobs. But Urban Kai ramps up the relaxation to the next level. Their fitness classes take place on the Hillsborough River, where yoga groups stretch and bend atop stand-up paddleboards. The aquatic setting surrounds exercisers in waterfront architecture and open skies, which take on brilliant hues at sunrise and sunset. Dolphins, turtles, cats, and other marine life make occasional appearances as well. Urban Kai was founded by Michael Conlee and his wife, Aimee. Mr. Conlee originally started paddle boarding as a hobby, but he quickly realized that his new pastime had toned his physique. Mr. Conlee started Urban Kai, and—along with his fellow instructors—he now teaches several on-water fitness classes. Urban Kai's yoga-on-water class, for example, helps participants build strength and flexibility, while warrior-zen workouts combine paddleboard exercises with on-land workouts. Mr. Conlee and his team also take groups on long-distance paddleboard tours.

  • Xtreme Dance Company of Tampa
Xtreme Dance Company of Tampa forms a family out of its network of instructors, many of whom trained together in the past. Regardless of the dance style being taught—and the curriculum covers more than a few, from flamenco to hip-hop—they focus as much on building confidence as honing form. Students of all ages might practice ballet techniques, tap choreography, and acrobatic stunts under their supportive guidance, and they even take on babysitting duties: during Parents' Night Out sessions, they entertain youngsters with lessons and games, allowing adults to have a carefree evening.

  • Kayak Valet
The crew at Kayak Valet has one mission: to get more people out and enjoying the local waterways and scenery via kayaks or paddleboards. Since storing, hauling, unloading, reloading, and potty training their own kayaks can deter people from boating, the team sets up shop to cancel out such deterrents. They take care of nearly every task, bringing all equipment necessary for a leisurely paddle on puddles of all sizes right to the launch site. The crew will pick up and deliver equipment to popular launch sites within Hillsborough, Pinellas, and Manatee Counties. To keep the aquatic adventure accessible, the shop rents only kayaks and standup paddleboards that can be piloted by anyone, experienced or not. Additionally, they give visitors tips on paddling and safety techniques and sell new kayaks, paddleboards, and accessories.

  • Curtis Hixon Park
Cirque Over The Park erupts into a glowing, community-wide celebration as the courageous aerialists and circus performers of Moving Arts of Tampa Bay prompt collective gasps from onlookers while they vault upside-down from flying trapezes and dangle fearlessly from colorful drapery. After staking their claim in the park with their lawn chairs, blankets, and bronze statues of the family dog, viewers cast their eyes skyward toward the daring acrobats and contortionists, who strike gravity-defying poses and sway back and forth on hanging hoops. While the lively troupe drops jaws, attendees can fill their conveniently open mouths with the wares of local food vendors, including offerings from 3 Suns Organic Bistro, Burger Culture, and Cupping Cakes. Live music complements the night?s astonishing visual arts, including energetic performances by Fencewalk Band, as well as Justin and Travis from The Groves. A portion of the evening?s proceeds will go to Tampa Bay Businesses for Culture and the Arts.

  • Bluz and BBQ
Produced by the Davis Islands Chamber of Commerce, the second annual Bluz & BBQ event sates senses with live music and barbecue from local vendors, contributing to the fundraising effort for the revitalization of the historic Roy Jenkins Pool, a Davis Islands landmark. Like any good roast-beef market, the currency at Bluz & BBQ comes in the form of Little Piggie Bucks, which are valid for a number of menu items including Yuengling drafts ($3), Cigar City Brewery drafts ($4), and barbecue plates ($6?$12). Event attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and a picnic blanket that doubles as a giant handkerchief to the event, ensuring comfort and cleanliness during six live blues performances from musicians such as Damon Fowler, a roots-rock virtuoso and Florida native.
