Since 1993, Cirque Dreams' family-friendly variety extravaganzas have called upon a cast of acrobats, strongmen, and daredevils to wring the oohs and aahs out of audiences with tremendous feats of derring-do. During each themed production, more than 100 performers garbed in dazzling outfits twirl high in the air, contort their bodies into impossible shapes, and solve long division problems to earn uproarious applause from the crowd. At Dream Studios in Pompano Beach, Florida, hundreds of contracted artists from around the world develop their skills and prep for Cirque Dreams performances under the direction of Neil Goldberg and his team of choreographers, contortionists, and designers.

  • Champion Executive Golf Course
A chili cook-off. A Renaissance faire. A music festival. What do these things have in common, aside from being fantastic ways to spend a Saturday? They're all events that call the Hillcrest Event Center home. Set in the middle of a sprawling outdoor complex near the Quad Cities, the center plays host to all kinds of gatherings, from the big ones listed above to smaller parties for graduations, reunions, and corporate retreats. In addition to space, the center also sports facilities, including two pavilions, a 7,500-seat amphitheater, and three outdoor staging areas connected by over a mile of well-groomed trails. With space for as many as 40,000 and as few as 100 guests, Hillcrest is an ideal destination for big groups. However, smaller parties can also find plenty to do here. The center's 9-hole golf course, swimming pool, and camping grounds entertain visitors day and night. A breezy par 30, the executive course caters to all experience levels, inviting beginners to take on its short holes while letting seasoned golfers hone their approach shots. After navigating the water hazards, guests can purposely head to the Olympic-sized swimming pool, which ripples at the center of a 3,000-square-foot sundeck where waiters serve poolside food and drinks. Or, dine at The BBQ Pit, home of the Illinois BBQ Fest. As the sun sets, the crackling glow of fires peppers the campgrounds, illuminating the nylon sides of tents or canvas hulls of mobile RVs. Tent sites include access to the resort's hot showers and restrooms, while the RV facilities' hookups pump water and electricity into mobile homes so residents can bathe in private and use electric carving knives for whittling. When the sun rises, residents can begin their day with a hike on the resort's nature trails. Although the staff makes operations look effortless, a massive amount of work goes into making Hillcrest run. Much of it is done in the name of learning; Hillcrest is a frequent destination for college interns, who learn on the job in fields ranging from Turf Management and Hospitality to Graphic Design and Social Media. The day-to-day operations are also memorialized in American Resort, a homebrewed reality show now in its fifth online season.

  • Sukhava Bodhe Yoga & Music Festival
Days at Sukhava Bodhe Yoga & Music Festival end around the campfire. As flames flicker, they spill light over a group of like-minded individuals: yogis, musicians, activists, and anyone else who has found his or her way to the annual celebration of mind, body, and spirit. According to event organizers, Sukhava Bodhe means "joyful awakening." That's what attendees hope to experience when they emerge from their tents each morning and start a journey into new areas, both physically and spiritually. Vibrant flowers blanket the festival's venue, the 37-acre Stonehouse Farm. Walking paths meander around the grounds and lead to different events, passing by a tranquil pond and a limestone farm house from the nineteenth century. Across these grounds, experts lecture and lead classes in areas such as yoga, massage, and even organic farming. Live performers score the day with international music that ranges from American Folk to Kirtan, a form of call and response. Dancing often breaks out during these shows, which allows everyone in attendance to become part of the performance and show off their well-oiled Macarena moves.

  • Sunday at Sandwich Antiques
It was love at first sight between antique dealer Chuck Springob and a bench he found at the Third Sunday Market in Bloomington. But as the Daily Herald reports, it also turned out to be love at first sight between Chuck and the bench’s owner, Mary. Now married, the Springobs furnish their five-bedroom two-story home with antiques from their combined eight storage units; the remaining stock fills their backyard barn. Along with fellow enthusiast Maureen Little, the couple shares its passion for antiques with Sunday at Sandwich Antiques, held at the Sandwich Fairgrounds. From May to October, dealers from four states gather one Sunday each month to sell their collectibles and crafts at an all-day festival with food and free parking.
