The Prince and Michael Jackson Experience
As president of Bomb Hip-Hop Records, San Francisco DJ Dave Paul is a highly revered one-man party machine. With a knack for the beat for and a surplus of wax he found at an abandoned Yankee Candle store, Dave orchestrates dance bacchanals that engage revelers anywhere he hangs his headphones. He’s conquered the Bay Area, LA, Portland, Vegas, Chicago, and New York with his unique extravaganza, The Prince and Michael Jackson Experience, and now, he brings the evening of inventive mashes, unabashed nostalgia, and flashing lights to the Motor City. In greatest hits, remixes, and rare cuts, Dave combines the funky sounds of The Purple One with The King of Pop, perhaps blending the gospel intro from “Let’s Go Crazy” with the liquid bass-line from “Billie Jean.” Later, the party adopts a battle-like format where audiences hold up signs declaring allegiance to their chosen soul savior as they boogie down to their favorite jams, which also include cuts from the Jackson Five, Janet Jackson, and former Prince girlfriends such as Sheila E and Vanity 6.
Saint Andrew's Hall
What was once the meeting spot for the Saint Andrew's Society of Detroit now hosts the hottest live acts and dance parties, including performances by Nirvana, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, and Iggy Pop. The Main Ballroom sports a tricked-out sound-and-lighting system, a VIP balcony, a hardwood dance floor, and a bar more than 35 feet long. The lower level of The Shelter lives up to its name, as red curtains and a cabaret offer an escape to mellower pastures. Upstairs at The Burns Room, patrons chill out on lounge furniture under chandeliers while savoring views of Congress and the RenCen.
