The spectrum of silliness is contained within three Adventure Landing attractions: race on go-karts in front of NASCAR-scout audiences, make a mark on frenemies in laser tag, or saunter and swing on the mini-golf course. (Laser tag is not available at the St. Augustine location.) Attempt each feat before going back for one last round of your two favorites, or use them all on a five-act go-kart play. The freedom of choice applies to how you use your five attractions; however, you must expunge the fun out of this factory's frenetic free-for-all in a single visit, making it a convenient way to happily exhaust over-energized tweens and tots.
Founded by Chief Master William Clark, Karate America is a popular martial-arts school that believes martial arts can make people happier and healthier. With locations around Florida, Karate America is staffed by highly trained instructors teaching children and adults the self-defense moves of tae kwon do, krav maga, and kickboxing. While training in a team-like atmosphere in each of these classes, members learn self-discipline and respect, gain lean muscle, and burn calories.
What once inhabited a single room at Alachua General Hospital is now Haven Hospice, a network of compassionate individuals who provide end-of-life care to more than 700 patients in 18 counties. The staff tend to patients at their homes, in nursing homes, and in hospitals, and take on the delicate task of counseling family members who are coping with grief. To support their efforts, Haven Hospice welcomes volunteers to provide companionship for patients and sponsors 5K runs, the proceeds of which benefit the patients and families it serves.
Each 60 minute Jazzercize class incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training (with handheld weights) to a total-body workout complete with cardio, strength training, and stretching techniques. Dancing With the Stars multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, simply review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn off up to 500 calories with each go-round.
In the midst of an asphalt desert lies an oasis surrounded by palm trees. Just above them, Puerto Plata Restaurant's terra-cotta-colored roof peeks out, beckoning the hungry to sate themselves with the restaurant's homemade Dominican fare. Traditional dishes, such as arroz con gandules, support plates of pollo guisado, a hearty chicken stew, and chillo frito, fried red snapper.
The staff at Barnett's has been conserving the artwork of others with custom-made frames since 1951. Using molding that ranges in intricacy from plain black borders to the gold-leaf-trimmed arabesques of a Louis XIII–style frame, framers cut enclosures to fit paintings, family treasures, valuable artwork, jerseys, and flags. Then they choose from an inventory of acid-free mats and conservation glass to sandwich art into its hermetic new home. Owner Drew Derrick-Bisbee's traditional art training, meanwhile, helps him when he’s restoring damaged frames and art, undoing destruction caused by water, fire, or a gaggle of teething babies. Barnett's showroom is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
