Michiganders take great pride in their ability to point out where they live on their hands. It doesn’t hurt that their state is conveniently in the shape of a mitten, especially when it comes to serving as a guide or plotting out a trip from Grand Rapids to Detroit when a pen isn’t, well, handy.

The Lower Peninsula’s northern cities are renowned for their non-stop procession of season-specific activities, from the summer’s **National Cherry Festival** in Traverse City to winter skiing on the slopes of **Boyne Mountain**. In the spring, tulips blossom in a rainbow of colors across western Michigan. The Dutch stronghold of Holland even hosts a **Tulip Festival**, whose parades celebrate the blooming of the city’s more than six million tulips.

Traveling east down I-94, one eventually reaches the college town of Ann Arbor and its horde of Wolverine football fans. 109,901 students and alumni pack the University of Michigan’s **Big House**, one of the most recognized stadiums in the U.S. and hallowed ground to sports fans.

At the bottom of Michigan’s thumb sits Detroit, the state’s largest city and a major port in the Great Lakes system. A birthplace of countless American icons, Detroit saw the heyday of Motown soul music and gave rise to the boom of America’s auto industry. The city seems poised for another boom, as it now boasts a number of casinos and Greek restaurants to go with nearly all of Michigan’s pro-sports arenas. There’s also the **Ambassador Bridge**, which serves as a border crossing with neighboring Canada.

Speaking of bridges, there are quite a few in a state split into two peninsulas and surrounded almost entirely by water. America’s longest suspension bridge, the **Mackinac Bridge**, connects Michigan’s upper and lower peninsulas. Though sparsely populated, the Upper Peninsula is a treasure trove of natural wonders, including rushing waterfalls, vast forests, and the great **Soo Locks** at Lake Superior’s edge.
