There's more than one way to glow, and Luminate 5K has a bunch of them: glowing necklaces, glowing eyeglasses, and other pieces of bright apparel that runners can wear. But the nighttime race's most spectacular light show happens at the finish line. There, runners and spectators celebrate at an after party that resembles a Chinese lantern festival, where decorative lanterns illuminate the crowd of revelers. It's at this point that the participants can take out their LED balloons—one of several souvenirs that comes with entry—to write a wish on its surface and launch it into the sky.
As you might gather from the spirit of its after party, the race itself focuses more on fun than rankings. People can run, walk, or even amble with a stroller, and they can deck out themselves and their baby carriages in neon or LED items. Those who would like to know their time can purchase timing chips for $5 or pay a friend to jog alongside them and count off the seconds.
